An Ascender Bootcamp, in partnership with Bridgeway Capital

You’ve spent years developing your craft. Now people want to buy your work, and you’re ready to figure out what kind of business makes sense for you.

First Leap is an eight-week bootcamp for artists, makers, and designers in the Pittsburgh region. Together with a small cohort of fellow creatives, you’ll learn how to find your buyers, tell your story, price your work sustainably, and choose the sales channels that fit. The program wraps up with a pitch day where you’ll meet museum store buyers, gallery owners, and community lenders.

We believe every creative deserves a business that fits their goals, whether that means a full-time career, a profitable side business, or simply the stability to keep making meaningful work. We’ll help you define what success looks like for you and leave with a real plan to get there.

Up to 30 participants | Eight weekly sessions

First Leap 2027: Build a Creative Business That Works for You

Who this is for:
First Leap is designed for emerging creatives in the Pittsburgh region, including:

  • Visual artists, painters, and printmakers

  • Makers and craftspeople working in wood, ceramics, fiber, metal, and more

  • Jewelry, fashion, and product designers

  • Musicians and other creatives with work to sell

You don’t need a business plan, an LLC, or a website to apply. You do need a body of work you’re proud of, curiosity about the business side, and a willingness to talk with real customers along the way. Each cohort includes up to 30 participants from a mix of disciplines, so you might be sitting next to a furniture maker on one side and a jewelry designer on the other. The economics of your work may differ, but the fundamentals are shared, and that mix makes the conversations richer.

Workshop Schedule

  • Week 1: Do I Really Want to do This?

Define your creative identity as a business, understand the real costs and risks, and decide where you want to be in three years.

  • Week 2: Customer Discovery

Learn who actually buys work like yours, whether that’s collectors, gift-givers, wholesale accounts, or commission clients.

  • Week 3: Value proposition and brand story

Turn the story you already know into one that helps a stranger understand why your work matters to them, and see how it carries across your website, packaging, and social media.

  • Week 4: The ask

Shape your pitch for the audience you need most: a gallery or shop buyer, a lender, or a grant reviewer.

  • Week 5: Product and offering design

Explore how to sell what you already make, from originals and editions to commissions, product lines, workshops, and licensing.

  • Week 6: Pricing and costing

Build a real cost basis, set prices that sustain you, and put basic financial habits in place.

  • Week 7: Sales channels

Find the one or two channels that fit your work, from markets and galleries to online and wholesale, and take a first real step into one.

  • Week 8: Pitch day

Meet with museum store buyers, gallery owners, and community lenders who are relevant to your path, then celebrate finishing the program with your cohort.
